Environmental Commitment

The Travis Perkins Group is fully committed to protecting the environment and we are continually looking for new ways to improve the environmental performance of all our trading activities.

We recognise that our environmental influence extends beyond the sites where we operate and that, through partnership with both our suppliers and customers, significant environmental improvements can be made.

Our aims are to prevent pollution, reduce carbon emissions, cut down on waste and increase the amount of certified, well-managed timber we buy.

We manage our activities to achieve these aims through our environmental management system which is certified to the international standard ISO 14001 and we maintain a certified chain of custody for both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) timber standards, so that our customers can feel confident about the timber they buy from us.

Our Environmental Targets

Why have environmental targets? Quite simply, because we believe we have a duty to run our business in a socially and environmentally responsible way on behalf of our customers, our staff, and our shareholders. An important part of our environmental approach is to set ourselves challenging targets to assess our environmental performance to ensure that our contribution to removing environmental constraints is measured and incremental

Timber Management

Timber management is a key area in which the Travis Perkins Group can make a big contribution towards the adoption of environmentally responsible building practices. The Travis Perkins Group is committed to raising the proportion of our timber and forest products supplied from known, legal, certified sources, and to eliminating all products that originate from illegally harvested timber.

Target for 2013

We estimate that we are now buying 88% by value of our timber from certified well managed or controlled sources. Our Target for 2013 is to buy timber and timber products  only from fully certified or controlled sources

Carbon Management

Carbon dioxide is the main ‘greenhouse’ gas responsible for global warming and climate change. In 2010 The Travis Perkins Group emitted 159,548 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and is committed to playing its part in reducing carbon emissions.

Target for 2013

We aim to reduce our carbon intensity (tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted per million pounds of adjusted sales) by 20% from 2005 levels.

Waste Management

Throwing waste into a hole in the ground should be a last, not the first, resort. Travis Perkins Group is committed to reducing the amount of waste produced by its business activities and to increasing the amount of waste that we recycle or recover. In 2010 we produced 16.7 tonnes of waste per million pound of sales of which we recycled 7.7 tonnes.

Target for 2013

We currently send less than half the amount of waste to landfill, per million pounds of adjusted sales, as we did in 2005, achieving our 2013 target ahead of time.

Packaging

We recognise that the packaging around our products ends up in someone else’s waste bin. While much of this packaging can be recycled it still ends up increasing that person or that company’s environmental footprint. For that reason we have set ourselves a new target to reduce the amount of packaging associated with products we trade.

Target for 2013

Our initial estimate of the amount of packaging we pass on to customers is 22 tonnes for every million pound of sales. We would like to get this down to 17.6 tonnes by the end of 2013. This equates to a 20% reduction from a 2008 baseline.

Water

Water is a limited natural resource and one which we rely on to provide us with a number of services. Demand for water is rising and because of a changing climate, regional and temporal deficiencies in supply become more likely. It is therefore sensible to use water more carefully and we are adopting an efficiency target to that end.

Target for 2013

We estimate that we currently use 112 litres per million pounds of sales down from 140 litres in 2008.  The  reduction is in excess of the 5% target we initially set ourselves for 2013.

Pollution Management

We operate in over 1,800 sites in the United Kingdom. We aim to be good neighbours and to ensure that our trading activities do not negatively affect the quality of life enjoyed by those living near to our branches, stores or offices.

Target for 2012

Any complaint or notifiable incident is avoidable, therefore we have an annual target of zero complaints and incidents.
