Business Areas

Every one of our colleagues plays a part in what we do. And each helps to make our business a success, whether they’re working face-to-face with our customers or performing their socks off back in our head office.

We have specialist and generalist merchants and between them they offer a whole range of roles, including Yard Sales and Service, Trade Counter Sales and Service, Delivery Driving, Telesales and Design Consultants. We have opportunities nationwide and also run apprenticeships in this area.

These are our colleagues you’ll probably be most familiar with, our store teams who are based all over the country. Roles here range from Design Consultants to Warehouse Co-ordinators, Customer Assistants to Fork Lift Drivers and Store Managers to Admin Managers.

Our finance teams are fully integrated into our business and integral to the success of the Group. The talented people who work here do so in an amazing variety of roles that spans everything from internal audit to business partnering.

We’re not your average business and this is not your average kind of Commercial department. It’s called Commercial because it really does influence the direction of the Group and roles here include product sourcing, supplier trading terms, supply contracts, product ranging, product promotions, supplier and category strategy, route-to-market (with supply chain) as well as new product development and innovation.

This is marketing where you’re given the freedom to think big and be creative, to develop powerful ideas and deliver best-in-class executions and winning business models that bring to life the very essence of our brands. What we do includes Branch Marketing Support, Promotional Activity and Campaigns, Direct Marketing, Online Marketing, Product Marketing, Customer Lifecycle Marketing, Advertising, Brand Awareness, Events and Sponsorship.

Supply Chain

Supply Chain’s mission is to consistently produce and reliably deliver high quality products as efficiently as possible, to meet customer needs and exceed our consumer’s expectations. Innovation is at the core of how we work and it needs to be – we supply more than 100,000 products from 1000 suppliers and work from 15 regional distribution centres.

Human Resources

Our colleagues here create the conditions for the rest of us to grow, learn, develop and get the most from our careers in the Group. The scope of that work is huge and includes Employee Relations and HR policy advisory services, Tribunal advocacy and case management services, Payroll, expenses and tax compliance services, HR administration and transactional services, HR data, statistics and analysis services, Recruitment and Development and Group Communications.

Our estate is huge and includes more than 2,000 branches and stores nationwide. Our property team is responsible for every aspect of the management of that extensive property portfolio, from buying and selling to equipping the properties, maintaining them and waste management.

Managed Services

This is a specialist department that delivers bespoke solutions to our Public Sector clients and their partners. It includes business development executives, bid teams, pricing teams, project managers and product teams who continuously analyse the most current data available to enable us to constantly offer added value to our customers.

As the technology landscape continues to evolve, so does our 450-strong technology team. Our environment is agile, lean and we’ve already gone ‘Google’. We’re on a mission to use technology to re-engineer the way the whole Group operates. As one of the largest in-house teams of IT specialists (for a non IT Company!) in the UK the scale is massive and so are the opportunities.

General Counsel

This is the company secretary and legal expertise that sits within our business. Our colleagues here look after our company statutory records, the PLC website, Board meetings and minutes, liaison with the Stock Exchange, Share Registrars and shareholders, our Annual Report and AGM.
