LAST HISTORIC TIMBER YARD IN THE COUNTRY SUPPLIES CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW BY HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE TO CELEBRATE 100 YEAR RELATIONSHIP

22 May 2017

Newson’s Timber Yard Pimlico, the last surviving historic timber yard in the country, celebrated its century-long relationship with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Newson’s Yard, currently occupied and managed by builder’s merchant Travis Perkins, has been in operation for 175 years and has supplied materials to the flower show since it was opened in 1913. A Victorian style horse-drawn carriage decorated with flowers was stationed outside the historic branch on Pimlico Road to celebrate the anniversary. Established in 1840, Newson’s Timber Yard provides an essential service to local businesses, tradesmen and the community. In October 2016 Westminster City Council gave the Grosvenor Estate planning permission for the site to be redeveloped into two 10,000 square feet retail units and high end apartments.

Commenting, Samantha Walters Assistant Branch Manager at Travis Perkins Pimlico, said:

“Supplying the infamous RHS Chelsea Flower Show is always an annual highlight for the branch team and we take such pride in providing the range of materials that contribute towards such fantastic creations. Newson’s Timber Yard has made a significant contribution to the success of the Chelsea Flower Show and the local community over the last century and we feel that celebrating our relationship with the show helps to highlight the historic role of the yard in the development of the area.”

Commenting, Tom Harfleet, Head of RHS Shows Development at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, said:

“Our suppliers greatly appreciate the role that the timber yard has played in the growth of the show throughout  our time in Chelsea.”
